In November of 1979 I was told by a doctor that I had incurable arthritis. He said that I could continue having medical treatment and, whenever the pain was severe, I could take injections and painkillers.

After I talked with a friend about what the doctor had said to me, she asked me if I believed it. I answered yes, because for many years I had suffered from this complaint. Still, even though a medical cure had not been found, I felt sure that somehow I could be well—how and when I did not know. She then gave me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and asked me to read it.

About three weeks after starting to read this book, I was coughing and feeling miserable. When a friend asked me what I was taking for the cough, I replied, "Nothing, because of this book that I am reading. It is teaching me how I can rely on God for complete healing." She then asked me what I would do if I did not get any better, and I replied, "I will stay with it." The very next day, while I was traveling to work, this passage from the Bible came to me (Ex. 20:2): "I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." With that I knew that I did not have to be sick—in bondage to a cold—because the Lord had already freed me. That night I slept very well, and by the next day the coughing had completely stopped and the cold symptoms were all gone.
