Fitness to receive and to do

The kind of fitness that is most needed in the world involves our spiritual-mindedness—a readiness to receive Christ, Truth, and to do the will of God. And in large measure, a fitness, or readiness, to know God is built on consecration, humility, and a realistic appraisal of one's need for regeneration.

When one is consecrated, he is faithful. He quietly endeavors to learn what God requires of him and to perform his responsibilities and duties. He strives to leave nothing undone that should be done, and he patiently awaits the outcome of his accomplishments. All the while he is earnest in his desire to serve God's purpose. So, he is always prepared, for he devotes himself entirely to fulfilling the divine will and to living according to the law of Principle.

Christ Jesus' parable of the virgins illustrates the necessity of being prepared and ready. The ten maidens had gathered to attend a wedding, which, as one Bible commentary observes, "was one of the greatest of all festivities in a Palestinian village. . . . The neighbor maidens, like all girls, would be eager to be present." The Interpreter's Bible (New York: Abingdon-Cokesbury Press, 1951), VII, 555- 556 .
