When I was a child I spent a number of weeks in bed with inflammatory rheumatism. At the start of the next school year, the doctor told my mother that I had a mitral valve lesion with severe leakage and a heart murmur. He predicted that if I lived through the winter, I would be a helpless invalid the rest of my life. I was allowed to go to school, but all physical activities were curtailed.
That year my teacher in school happened to be a Christian Scientist. Her sister was a Christian Science practitioner. (My mother and grandmother were familiar with Christian Science but didn't attend church. They were also acquainted with the practitioner.) When my teacher learned we knew something of Christian Science, she talked with me about this religion, and it was very appealing to me.
There was a beautiful new branch Church of Christ, Scientist, on our side of town. Whenever our family drove past it, I would wish I could see the inside. However, I was attending Sunday School in a church of another denomination close to my home.
