At one time I applied to join a travel/study group to tour Israel and Greece. But practically at the same time I submitted my application and a deposit, I became almost immobilized with some kind of back problem that made walking or even moving painful and labored. In an effort to gain release from this difficulty, I prayed, studied the Bible Lesson outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, and pondered articles I heard on cassette tapes put out by The Christian Science Publishing Society. Then, because I fully expected complete healing, I sent in a second payment.
But the problem persisted. So I sought help from a Christian Science practitioner. Almost immediately I felt I needed to learn how to really love others—to become aware of the inherent goodness of everyone. After that, instead of perpetuating a rather indifferent attitude, I started cultivating a loving concern for others; replacing self-centeredness with greater thoughtfulness; and eliminating aloofness, self-love, and personal pride through selflessness and sincere caring. In other words, I consistently made a serious effort to upgrade my thinking.
Despite the persistence of the difficulty, I sent in the final payment for the trip and made arrangements to go. Near the departure date, because movement was still painful and limited, I telephoned my sister and offered her my paid-for reservation. Her response was, "If I can arrange to go on this trip it will be with you, and not in place of you." At that moment, deep in my heart, I felt I would go, even though it did seem physically impossible.
