Through my study of Christian Science I have...
Through my study of Christian Science I have had many proofs of God's love and power. One such proof occurred some years ago, yet the many lessons learned then have remained fresh and inspiring to me. At that time, almost twenty years ago, I became quite ill. I stumbled and fell frequently and became weak and could barely eat. I had the help of a Christian Science practitioner from time to time, but in each instance I dismissed the practitioner with the assurance that I could handle my own case.
Finally my husband became deeply concerned. He called my teacher in Christian Science and told her that I was getting steadily worse, was only semiconscious most of the time, and was very thin. It was agreed that I should go to a care facility for Christian Scientists. And so the next day at 6:30 in the morning, my teacher and her husband picked me up and drove me to what was then the Christian Science Benevolent Association at Chestnut Hill. (I look back on this part of the story with deep gratitude for the love expressed by my teacher.)
I remember little about my arrival at the nursing facility and have only a fragmentary recollection of the first few weeks. But I do recall that as I became more aware of my surroundings, I was quite touched by the patience and love of the nurses. Simultaneously I saw how lacking in compassion I had been with many around me. Later, when I was finally out of bed and in a wheelchair, I learned more lessons in humility and patience. (I was in the nursing facility about two months.)
