On the magnitude of Jesus' mission

Christian Science brings to our attention with exceptional clarity the revolutionary implications of what Jesus taught and did. Among other things, this Science awakens in us a new perception of how completely he shattered the very framework of matter's so-called laws—the material formulations that are supposed to control inexorably all human life.

By his demonstrations the Master broke through matter's confines to prove that true substance is unconfined Spirit, that real Life is not flesh-bound, and that man's real being is indestructible. He proved that the ultimate, all-governing authority over all things belongs to God, Spirit—the incorporeal Ego, Truth, Life, Love, whom he called the Father.

Nullifying accepted "laws" of gravity and physics, he walked on the water. Superseding the "might" of natural forces with spiritual power, he stilled the storm. Contrary to matter-based definitions of substance, he fed five thousand people with a few loaves and fishes. Overcoming the supposedly ineluctable processes of organic life, he restored Lazarus, who had already been in the tomb four days. His whole mission supplied eloquent proof for Mary Baker Eddy's words, "The central fact of the Bible is the superiority of spiritual over physical power." Science and Health, p.131.
