Man is not defective

The sayings "I was born with it" and "I was born without it" seem to many to assess unalterable conditions. But Christian Science challenges the belief that birth defects are fixed. This challenge rests on the conviction that God, perfect Mind, is the only possible creator and cause; that in truth man is His perfect effect.

When we gain through Christian Science an understanding of spiritual law, we find it a mistake to attribute imperfection to God's will or to genetic quirks. Imperfection is a rectifiable error of belief, a false sense created neither by God nor by genes.

When Christ Jesus, the master Christian and the ultimate Scientist, healed birth defects, he disproved the common predication of materialistic religion and speculative science, the belief that birth defects have a genuine cause and therefore a reason to exist. Once when Jesus and his disciples passed a man blind since birth, the disciples wondered, "Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?" But the Master's restoration of the man's sight placed the seal of divine theology, the Science of Christ, on his answer: "Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him." John 9:2,3.
