As I went to the kitchen one evening to prepare a sandwich, one of my hands became completely limp. Instantly these words from Psalms came to my thought (73:26): "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever." I had no fear as I repeated this verse loudly. Immediately, feeling returned to the hand, starting at the wrist and proceeding to the tips of the fingers, and I went ahead with making the sandwich. This healing brought home to me as never before the fact, as taught in Christian Science, that God and God alone is Life. It was also evident that He is Mind, because I was not familiar with that verse from Psalms, which I located later in a Concordance to the Bible.

Another incident illustrated the truth of this passage (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy, pp. 149–150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance." One rainy Sunday evening while I was returning home from church, I was struck by a car as I crossed the street. By the time the driver realized what had happened, I was under the front end of the vehicle. He immediately backed up and came to help me. One leg was injured, and I was in great pain. I asked him to leave me alone for a few minutes. He did, and through my prayer the feeling that I was losing consciousness was quickly reversed with the realization that God, Mind, is ever present.

At that moment a church member who was passing by recognized me and ran back to the church for help. An usher came at once, and he and the driver lifted me up. A cabdriver stopped to offer help, even though he had passengers. I was assisted into the cab and taken the short distance to my apartment.
