Before the fall of 1963 I knew nothing about Christian Science

Before the fall of 1963 I knew nothing about Christian Science. The concept of spiritual healing seemed foreign and perplexing. I couldn't understand how intelligent high-school friends who were Christian Scientists could believe that serious illness could be cured by prayer alone.

Following a lengthy discussion, one of these friends loaned me a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and invited me to visit a local Christian Science Sunday School. After several months of regular attendance, the reason for my friends' willingness to rely on Christian Science for healing was clear to me. More important, I was finding that Christian Science illuminates the Scriptures, offering answers to my questions about God and man—answers that I had not been able to find elsewhere.

Since 1963 there have been many instances of healing, protection, and guidance. In August, prior to my junior year in college, I became very ill. Since I was under twenty-one years old and my family are not Christian Scientists, arrangements were made for me to see a doctor. The condition was diagnosed as infectious mononucleosis. I was told there was no medical remedy for the condition, and that I would have to spend the next several weeks in bed.
