I was born with defective glands

I was born with defective glands. The doctor said if we moved to a warm climate, I might survive. We went to Florida, and I did so well there that my parents decided we could safely return to the North. But my condition deteriorated rapidly after the move, and the doctor gave no hope for me.

Only then did my mother decide to investigate Christian Science. (She had been scornful of its claims up to that point.) She went to a Christian Science Wednesday evening meeting and there heard a testimony of healing—a healing of what I had. She plunged into Science with all her heart and started by calling a Christian Science practitioner, who began praying for me at once. I can remember the practitioner's twice-weekly visits, when she would rock me and sing hymns. The healing took place in six months. And a few years later, with four small children to raise, my mother became a full-fledged practitioner herself.

When I was nine years old, the school doctor gave my parents the verdict that I was going blind. However, I had full faith in Christian Science healing. By then my mother had been a Christian Scientist for three years, and I was a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School. I was determined to be healed.
