I contacted a Christian Science practitioner one evening following what appeared to be a severe attack of influenza. She asked me to think about this passage from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. xi): "The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation." I went to bed strengthened and comforted.

That night I slept very well. The painful symptoms of influenza had completely vanished by early morning, and I went to work as usual. I was freed from a sense of captivity, and later that morning I telephoned the practitioner to thank her for the prayerful assistance she'd given me. My quick recovery, I knew, was entirely due to Science. Two days later I noticed that a skin irritation which had bothered me for years had disappeared, just like the symptoms of influenza. This additional proof of healing confirmed my understanding that Christian Science does heal—regardless of how longstanding the difficulty has been.

Once, while I was at work, a door suddenly swung back and hit me in the face. The severity of the blow dazed me, leaving a deep cut below one eye. My employer insisted that I see a doctor, and under the circumstances I felt it wise to oblige him.
