The oil well in your backyard
You have an oil well in your backyard! "Who—me?" you ask. "What do you mean? I don't even have a backyard!"
Yes, in the context in which I write (although this "well" may be hidden away in the dim recesses of thought), we are all so endowed. But to find the bounty this fact points to, we need to become aware of it. In these times of oil and gas shortages—as we consider all the material advantages these useful items mean—a higher insight can be of much value.
Christ Jesus never denied the human necessities. He declared to his followers, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt. 6:33. It's important to note here that the Master taught that God alone should be the object of our seeking; then the needed things would be added—not that we should seek God and the desired things. The latter would be dividing our loyalty between God and mammon. Jesus had no use for divided loyalty.
