Years ago, for a wedding gift, a dear friend gave me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Since at the time I had no interest in it, the book was put away on a shelf. Little did I realize that before long it would help me establish my life on a spiritual basis.

One year later a healthy baby boy was born to us. However, when he was six months old he suffered from severe stomach trouble. A physician treated him, but the condition did not improve. One day, noting that the child was no better after I'd given him the prescribed medicine, I called the doctor. He was not in town, and I was reluctant to see another doctor for fear he'd give our son a further dose of strong medication. I decided not to take this risk.

Alone with the baby, I remembered my friend's gift of Science and Health and how she had said that healings have been accomplished simply by studying that book. If it works for others, I thought, it should work for me. Opening it at random, I turned to the Lord's Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation given by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 16-17). Having been raised in a Protestant religion, I was familiar with this prayer. But the interpretation of the first verse stirred me deeply (p. 16):
