Early one morning I was wakened by the painful symptoms of a sinus infection in my forehead and upper part of my throat. As I lay in bed wondering how I would handle this problem, I realized that I had not been plagued by these distressing symptoms for more than two years. It was during this period of time that I had been led to Christian Science.

Prior to that, I had known nothing about this teaching as a healing Science. Our religious background was from a Protestant denomination—one that left sickness in the hands of the medical profession instead of looking to the church for a solution. The chronic attacks of sinus trouble had occurred for five or six years. With each attack I would ordinarily have to spend from one to two weeks in bed before the disturbing symptoms would go away. To find relief from this problem, I had gone to one of the best ear, nose, and throat specialists in the area for treatments. However, after several years I had given up the treatments because of their ineffectiveness. I had accepted the view that there was no cure for this kind of sinus trouble and that I would just have to live with it.

Now, in my early morning discomfort, I reflected that in these last two years I had been learning something about how this Science heals. In this case I did feel I needed help, and right away. So I called a Christian Science practitioner whom I knew. He assured me that he would be happy to help me. Then I proceeded to tell him of all the painful symptoms I was experiencing. I had got about one quarter of the way through when he interrupted me by saying, "Now that is a lie." I was quite taken aback by this remark and wondered, "How can he say a thing like that to me? After all, I'm the one going through these things. I ought to know." However, he did not stop there. He paused a moment, then began telling me all about the real man, who is made in God's likeness and always has been perfect, whole, healthy, and free. And he insisted that spiritual man was my true identity. He then asked me to call him that evening.
