Our daughter had been in the fourth grade just...
Our daughter had been in the fourth grade just three weeks when I received a call from her teacher requesting a conference. Although in working with this child I was keenly aware that her first three years of school had been quite difficult for her, I wasn't prepared for what I was about to hear. The teacher informed me that she had observed our daughter's academic and physical activity closely. As a result, she felt that the child had some form of learning disability, which appeared to be growing progressively worse. She backed up her suspicions by showing me evidence of the child's work. Not only did there appear to be a problem of comprehension, but an increasing lack of coordination in writing skills and other activities. The physical education program was also extremely difficult for her. The teacher strongly recommended that we seek help from a special education teacher and a psychologist. Otherwise, she felt, the child would be unable to remain in fourth grade. I thanked her for her interest and concern, but told her that as a Christian Scientist I would prefer not to take those routes. I assured her that my husband and I would take immediate steps to do everything we could to help this youngster.
On the way home from the meeting, I reached out to God with all my heart, knowing that this precious child was enveloped in her Father's love and protective care. I firmly declared that God, divine Mind, was the source of all intelligence and activity, and that she was governed and controlled by His undeviating law of harmony.
When I arrived home, I called a Christian Science practitioner to help support our prayerful efforts. I'll always be grateful for the loving encouragement she gave our daughter and me. Although my husband is not a Christian Scientist, he was willing for this to be worked out in Science. Almost immediately we were led to take some human footsteps. An excellent tutor was found, who worked diligently with the child. I, too, worked with her faithfully, encouraging her and helping her with her studies. Most important of all, I prayed with her and for her, continually assuring her of man's God-given abilities and intelligence.
