Several years ago an incident took place in my life that has been a continuing source of inspiration to me. When I woke one day with a painful, swollen leg, I immediately affirmed that my real selfhood as the perfect expression of God could not possibly experience discomfort. However, the condition persisted. As a wife and mother of two young boys, I found it more and more difficult to accomplish my normal daily tasks. So I prayed to gain a better understanding of activity and mobility as expressions of immortal Life. Also, I sought to spiritualize the foundation of my being, to see that true activity is based on divine Principle.

After a few days of prayer along these lines, with no physical relief, I was discouraged. One evening while praying I questioned my motive. Was my purpose for all the work I had done selfless, or was I simply seeking physical relief? The answer was plain, I knew I had been far from selfless, and with a renewed sense of humility I again turned to God. While thinking about my spiritual identity as His beloved, complete, and perfect offspring, I realized that nothing could tarnish that identity; no matter what happened outwardly, I would still be the whole, flawless child of God.

Soon fear vanished, and I was able to perceive the specific truth needed for my healing. The angel message came in one word: "Love." I was a little surprised at first, for this message didn't seem to have anything to do with motion or foundation, or the truths I had been considering earlier. I felt that all along I had been expressing qualities of Love—compassion, gentleness, tenderness—but I earnestly wished to be obedient to God's voice, so I opened my thought to His message.
