At the age of fourteen I had a brief acquaintance with Christian Science

At the age of fourteen I had a brief acquaintance with Christian Science. My sister, in whose house I lived, took me to some Sunday services and Wednesday testimony meetings in a branch church. Although I found them very nice, I hardly understood a thing. My sister also gave me copies of The Herald of Christian Science, German Edition. I enjoyed reading them, but they, too, held little meaning for me.

More than thirty years later I was a married woman living in another city. I'd traveled a very rough road and was a broken person, physically and mentally, due to the tragic loss of our only son. Depression enveloped me, and I had little desire to go on living—even for our other two children and my husband. I often sat for hours on a cliff overlooking a quiet beach, staring down into the water and thinking I might find peace way down there. When relatives and friends tried to comfort me, I told them I didn't need comforting, that my troubles were simply the cross I had to bear.

While in this distraught state I saw a newspaper ad giving information about Christian Science church services. I told my husband I wanted to attend, but he felt we didn't belong there. One day, however, he brought home an invitation to a Christian Science lecture that a friend had given him. This time my husband felt I should go, and I did.
