The love of God led me to Christian Science
The love of God led me to Christian Science. At a time when I was feeling almost overcome with my own problems, my husband was confined to bed with arthritis. One evening I was so depressed that I left the house to go to a nearby store that had a soda fountain where I thought I could perhaps meet someone to chat with.
On my way, I looked down a side street and noticed a bungalow that was all lighted up. I was curious about the gathering, and I decided to stop and find out what was going on. People were entering the building, so I went in also. I discovered that I had walked into a Church of Christ, Scientist, and that this was a Wednesday testimony meeting. The Reader announced that members of the congregation were welcome to help themselves to free literature on Christian Science as they left the church, so I took a copy of The Christian Science Journal. I felt so uplifted that I wanted to keep on singing the beautiful hymns I had heard at the service. I said to myself, "There is something about this church! I came here so depressed, and now I feel so uplifted."
I went home and read everything in the Journal—the articles, editorials, and testimonies of healing. A book called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy was mentioned a number of times in the magazine, and I found out that I could borrow it from a Christian Science Reading Room. I kept the book for the allotted time, renewed it for two weeks, and then bought my own copy. My husband was somewhat skeptical of my new interest. He felt we already had enough trouble to contend with in our lives. But through my reading of this remarkable book, he was healed of arthritis and went back to his position. After that I was able to read and study more, but I was still suffering physically myself.
