Love triumphs over tyranny

Mortal mind—the belief in an intelligence, a power, apart from God—is the culprit in every case of persecution and tyranny. This is true just as much in the suppression of political dissidents who have legitimate grievances as in the matter of hostage-taking, which is tyranny in another form. The remedy is always to be found through a spiritually scientific understanding of Love, the divine Mind. Christian Science shows us that God, divine Mind, is the only Mind, and from this basis tyranny can be expunged.

Mrs. Eddy has this to say of tyranny and despotism, and it applies wherever they surface: "Mankind must learn that evil is not power. Its so-called despotism is but a phase of nothingness." Science and Health, p. 102; And, "The despotic tendencies, inherent in mortal mind and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through the action of the divine Mind." ibid., p. 225;

Throughout history men and women who have had the moral courage to speak out for the rights of conscience have been persecuted or martyred. But these protests are often a necessary step toward greater freedom for all. And they symbolize the deeper need for humanity's freedom from the thrall of material sense.
