When I was a high school student, a frightening, irritating skin...
When I was a high school student, a frightening, irritating skin condition suddenly developed on my body. At first it was not visible to others, as it was covered by my clothing; but very quickly it spread to other parts of my body. Since my early years I had been a student in the Christian Science Sunday School and had known only the remedy of divine Truth. So it was natural for me to pray as I had been taught in the Sunday School.
Despite my efforts to prove the unreality of disease with the truth of God's perfect man, the condition seemed to erupt more violently. My mother called a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to treat me through prayer. Within two days the condition disappeared as quickly as it had appeared, and the skin was again clear and free of irritation.
Since that time, when I have found myself struggling with a problem that is not yielding easily, I have often recalled this earlier healing. Mrs. Eddy assures us (Science and Health, p. 365), "If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one visit, and the disease will vanish into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine." This indeed was what took place in my healing of the skin condition—it simply vanished "into its native nothingness." Although it had seemed very real at one moment, it was quickly proved to be a lie the next.
