Many years ago I chose to rely on Christian Science treatment instead of medical surgery. A lump on the back of my neck was diagnosed by a physician as a cyst, and he said, "You will have to have it cut out. That's the only way you will get rid of it." The date for surgery was set, but as my husband drove me home from the doctor's office, I gave the situation serious thought.

Up to this time I had occasionally read copies of the Christian Science Sentinel, and some of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which I owned. But I had never asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner. I was learning that God heals through prayer, so I decided to rely on this healing Science for my help.

My husband knew nothing of the teachings of Science, but he agreed that I could try it for a while, and have the surgery later if it was still necessary. But I had no such doubt. I canceled the operation and called the nearest public practitioner—about fifty miles away. We kept in touch by mail, and the practitioner sent me references to study in Science and Health. As each of these letters arrived, I found that I had already come across the recommended references in my own study. As I look back, I can see this as evidence of the one Mind in operation. Among the references was this one from page 495 of Science and Health: "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not."
