Christian Science college organization—a healing support

During my freshman year in college I began smoking. Some of the friends I'd made smoked, and it seemed the thing to do. One day a girl I'd met on campus, a Christian Scientist, asked if I was interested in attending campus meetings of the Christian Science college organization. I went to the next meeting, and I continued to attend. The activity of the college organization made me feel the love and support of The Mother Church, and I developed new friendships. The smoking habit simply dropped away, and there was never a temptation to resume it. The college friends with whom I had begun smoking, smoked little or not at all the rest of the year. We have remained good friends to this day.

"The depraved appetite for alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium, is destroyed only by Mind's mastery of the body. This normal control is gained through divine strength and understanding" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 406). That potent statement of truth has encouraged me to be strong spiritually, knowing that God is the unfailing source of this strength.

The college organization, composed of Christian Scientists who are faculty, instructors, or students, is a healing influence for good on campus. Weekly or bimonthly meetings include readings from the Bible and Science and Health that are apropos of the activities of that campus.
