Freed from smoking and drinking
Although my mother had been a student of Christian Science for...
Although my mother had been a student of Christian Science for over thirty years, it was not until my father's passing, when I saw her wonderful fortitude in the face of this separation, that I thought there could be anything in Science to help me. When I spoke to her about this, she gave me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, saying, "I think you are ready for it now."
As I studied this book together with the King James Bible, I found that the desire for liquor left me within a few weeks, although I had been a hard drinker. I was also freed from a craving for cigarettes (I had been a chain smoker).
During the Second World War, I was diagnosed by a military doctor as suffering from cardiac degeneration, but I was able to serve overseas. Today I feel fit and am able to run for a bus without difficulty. With the help of Christian Science practitioners at various times, I have been healed of a distressing skin condition, bowel trouble, and a tendency toward rheumatism.
