The public practice of Christian Science—for you?

The woman needed help. Her trouble with a neighbor had finally reached serious dimensions. Something had to be done. She came to the office seeking help now—specific and practical steps on how to initiate court action.

I was a law student serving in a legal aid clinic. As a service to the community, law students and local attorneys had teamed up to provide legal aid to indigents.

I was glad we were able to help the woman, but I was troubled. Who was going to heal her? What about the bitterness, the anguish and resentment? She needed so much more than legal advice. While the steps we offered were useful and appropriate, she needed to discover something of her true spiritual identity. She had a divine right to learn that God is Love—the only power, the very substance of consciousness. She deserved to understand how to love her neighbor—and find love in response.
