I often look back with deep gratitude for my family's affirmative reply to a neighbor's invitation that I be allowed to visit the Christian Science Sunday School with her son. In the ensuing years, there have been so many healings through Christian Science treatment that space does not permit a full accounting. Recently I listed all the healings—physical and mental—that I have witnessed, resulting from an understanding of Christian Science. The list was extensive. It included healings of deafness and broken bones, unemployment and pneumonia. Is it any wonder that my gratitude for Christian Science is full!
When I left home for the first time to attend college hundreds of miles away, the separation was extremely difficult for both my family and me. As the weeks passed, I thought I had overcome homesickness until I had an accident in the college swimming pool. In attempting to get out of the water by grasping the edge of the pool behind me, I slipped and was thrown forward with such force that my elbows touched in back of me, and there was the sound of a loud crack in my chest. There was no medical diagnosis, but the pain and other symptoms made it appear that a bone was broken or out of place. As a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School, I recognized this as my first opportunity, away from the loving care of my family, to put into practice what I had been learning in Sunday School. First, I had to overcome self-pity.
As I lay in bed suffering, a fellow student who was highly critical of Christian Science quipped, "Well, if Christian Science is what you say it is, why are you lying in bed? You must have something that will help you!" From that point on, I made a concerted effort to gain a clearer understanding of my wholeness and soundness as a spiritual idea and child of God. This understanding carried me through my daily tasks for three days, but the specific truth needed for a complete healing eluded me. On the fourth day, I called a Christian Science practitioner for help. Almost immediately he grasped the nature of the difficulty—a lingering belief in my thought of being separated from home. He assured me I could never be separated from the love of my Father-Mother God, and he agreed to give me treatment in Christian Science. Within twenty-four hours there was another loud snapping sound in my chest, and I was free from pain. The healing was instantaneous, and there was no long period of convalescence required for the bone to mend.
