Finally free

One morning a few weeks ago I woke up with a cramplike pain in my chest. I could not breathe properly or even move easily. I had some thoughts about God—that He is ever present and the only power. I tried to really see that everything is controlled entirely by God, divine Mind. The pain seemed to pass, so I got up, and as it was Sunday, I went to the Christian Science Sunday School.

I did not continue my mental work about the pain, but the fear of its return was with me all day. I went to bed still uneasy and aware that I had not completed the healing. Eventually, at about eleven thirty, I got out my Bible and Mrs. Eddy's book, Science and Health, and began to study. I looked up fear in the Concordances to Science and Health and found this reference very helpful: "If you succeed in wholly removing the fear, your patient is healed." Science and Health, pp. 411-412; I knew that it was only fear that was keeping me awake.

Then I got out a booklet that had been given to me by my Sunday School teacher. It was called "It's About You" and contained several healings experienced by teen-age girls. I turned to one healing, which contained the following quotation from Science and Health: "Every function of the real man is governed by the divine Mind." ibid., p. 151; I realized that in divine Mind every thing lives in harmony, all things working perfectly. There could be no exception to this rule. I remembered that it says in Science and Health, "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements." ibid., p. 475
