Speechless
We work with words all day long,
writing, erasing, thinking,
squaring them up in books,
wrapping them up in newspapers,
speaking them—see them here.
But when the winds of God blow,
our words go howling out.
When fire leaps over remaining syllables,
whatever is pure, enduring,
steps forth.
The silent Word is heard;
thereafter we speak "as one having authority."
