What can we do about the weather?

"For storm or shine, pure peace is thine..."

In order to refute disturbing indications that the weather is becoming increasingly violent and destructive and that there is nothing we can do about it, we need to get a higher viewpoint. It helps to ponder Mrs. Eddy's definition of the biblically oriented spiritual significance of "wind": "That which indicates the might of omnipotence and the movements of God's spiritual government, encompassing all things." Science and Health, p. 597;

Should we not logically conclude that an understanding of "the movements of God's spiritual government" can bring only peace and harmony and joy into our experience at all times? Speaking the Word of God, the Bible states, "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." John 1:3; And, "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Gen. 1:31; So, if God made all that was made (and He did), and it is very good (and it is), what then causes the earthquake, the tornado, the drought, and the destructive seasonal gale?

The latter part of the definition of "wind"—the material connotation—gives the answer: "Destruction; anger; mortal passions." It is not actually the weather we're combating, but counterfeit thought forces. Mrs. Eddy writes, "The material so-called gases and forces are counterfeits of the spiritual forces of divine Mind, whose potency is Truth, whose attraction is Love, whose adhesion and cohesion are Life, perpetuating the eternal facts of being." Science and Health, p. 293; God's law is an eternal fact, and this law of good is forever unchanging, always present, and all-powerful under all circumstances. Let's refuse to accept aggressive, destructive thoughts, but rather help to neutralize—by knowing this truth—any storm that may seem to arise, be it stormy weather or stormy human relationships.
