With deep appreciation for God and love for mankind, I offer the following experiences.

When I was about ten years old, I was helping to pull weeds from a rose garden. I worked without gloves. Several days later a painful and irritating condition appeared on my hands. I went to school as usual, but the teacher sent me to the school nurse. She told me I had some kind of an allergy and that I would have to have a doctor examine my hands and give me permission to return to classes. The doctor confirmed the nurse's remarks, and my parents were told to keep me at home till my hands were clean.

I had been a student in the Christian Science Sunday School since the age of two, and this was the first time I had been to a doctor. My mother quietly assured me that Christian Science treatment would certainly annul any medical prediction about my hands. A Christian Science practitioner was called. She told me that my spiritual selfhood could never be touched by irritation. She asked me to study the story of Naaman in the Bible (see II Kings 5: 1—14). I noted his lesson in obedience and humility. I tried to understand and use these qualities with my parents, friends, and teachers. I tried especially to think humbly and kindly about the doctor who had made the prediction about my hands.
