The Passport

Mary lived with her parents in a flat overlooking the Lake of Geneva in Switzerland. She went to a local school and also studied music. In the holidays she often helped to look after small children, because she was very fond of them.

A number of children whose parents were in other countries were staying with one of Mary's friends. They were a very happy group, and all of them attended a Christian Science Sunday School in the nearby town. Mary also went to that Sunday School and was in an older class with several other boys and girls of different nationalities, who were at various schools in the neighborhood. They had wonderful classes, discussing the works of Christ Jesus and different parts of the Lesson-Sermon In the Christian Science Quarterly; and trying to see how they could turn to God in their daily life. During the week they would study passages from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, so that on Sunday they were full of questions and ideas.

One Saturday, when Mary arrived at her friend's house, everyone was rushing around in small circles because one of the children had to leave suddenly the next day to join her parents abroad. They discovered that her passport needed renewing, and Mary was asked to go down to the British consul as quickly as possible. She got on her bicycle and was soon at his office, but it was locked, and all the offices in the building seemed to be deserted.
