The Most Important Point

When we pray for a healing, the hoped for result is sometimes delayed by a misunderstanding of the scientific basis for prayer. This basis is the reality of good and the unreality of evil. But when this important point is thoroughly understood, healing comes quickly.

Christian Science teaches that God is good and He is All. We may be willing to accept theoretically and declare that there can be nothing outside of Him, but we pray effectively when we acknowledge that there is nothing outside of Him. Christ Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32; To interpret this statement by translating "know the truth" to mean merely asserting what we hope will be true but do not really accept as true is to dilute knowing the truth with some knowledge of error. Although the result may be to some extent effective, since declaring partial truth is better than not declaring any truth, more is required if prayer is to be scientific and the result decisive.

For example, a statement that a disease cannot spread, prayerfully expressed and logically supported by reminding oneself of God's allness and goodness, should have a helpful effect on the thought of the individual who may be suffering from the disease. And because disease actually is belief rather than fact, the spread of the disease could well be checked as a result. But how much more effective it is to realize that the disease and all its so-called causes and symptoms are unreal! God, good, alone is real. God is Love. Nothing unlovely is real.
