This healing took place shortly after high school graduation, while I was attending a summer camp in a beautiful but remote spot across the country from my home. I was the only Christian Scientist at the camp, and, as far as I knew, for many miles around.

While playing in a touch football game, I was knocked to the ground while already in an unbalanced position. As I fell, I saw my ankle bend at right angles to my leg and heard a distinct cracking sound. Because the pain was not great at first, I unwisely ignored the incident. But the pain and swelling grew steadily, and by nightfall the ankle would not support any weight at all. I became very fearful that a bone had been broken, and called my mother long-distance for prayerful help in Christian Science. She gave her wholehearted support and suggested that I overcome my sense of fear, which she recognized as the immediate problem. I agreed to do so, but, tired and somewhat complacent, drifted off to sleep after a halfhearted effort.

I was awakened at about two-thirty in the morning by painful throbbing in my ankle. At once I knew that right then was "the accepted time" (II Cor. 6:2) to handle this suggestion.
