"Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived...

"Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p.215). On the same page, a marginal heading reads, "Real being never lost." This was proved in the experience of our daughter. Her mother died when she was only two, and I married her dad when she was three. There was a great difference in our religions, but because of our respect for one another, this was never a problem. Several years passed, and the little girl seemed to be a very withdrawn child. She did not express many normal qualities, was unnaturally subdued, never getting into things.

There came a time when I knew something must be done, and because my husband relied on medical treatment, I sought this help for her, trying to put myself in his shoes and to be respectful of his wishes. We also sought psychiatric advice, and after several talks and examinations with three doctors we were told she was retarded. Shock treatments were suggested, and we told them we would discuss it. As we left the offices, we both agreed we would never consent to that.

I asked my husband if I might take her to the Christian Science Sunday School, and with some reluctance, he did agree. With this right step, the error of belief in a limited personal mind as the source of her intelligence was brought to the surface, and the members of my church supported us with their loving thoughts. I constantly replaced every lie concerning limited intelligence in a child of God with the spiritual fact that God gave her all good, and she was healed.
