Gilgal was an outdoor shrine near Jericho, which featured, as its Hebrew name suggests, a circle of stones. Here the ark of the covenant, the wooden chest carried on poles that represented to the children of Israel God's presence with them, first rested after they crossed the Jordan River following the Exodus from Egypt, and here the ark and its traditions were still celebrated in Elijah's time.
