My mother placed me in a Christian Science Sunday School at an early age, and throughout my childhood I enjoyed the protective benefits of regular Sunday School attendance. Yet it was not until I began to love the Christ influence genuinely and obey its requirements that the wonderful fruitage of Christian Science began to appear in my experience. There was some rebellion to be overcome in my thought over the disciplines of Christian Science, and the greatest help was the dedicated example of other Christian Scientists.
When I was seventeen, a Sunday School teacher's inspired discussions of man as the spiritual idea of God compelled my continued attendance at Sunday School, even though during the week the suggestions were very persistent that I wanted to give up Christian Science. In college, I found in the testimonies and examples of my friends at a Christian Science organization the challenge to utilize the truths in the Christian Science Quarterly Lesson-Sermon for myself as they did. My first attempt to be truly obedient to my highest understanding of the application of those truths gave me the courage to rely solely on God's guidance as to the man I should marry. I endeavored to deny the beliefs that fate, personal charm, or human desire had anything to do with man's only true relationship—his unity with God. This prayerful effort led me into marriage with a sincere Christian Scientist whose devotion means more to me every day.
The births of our two daughters, under Christian Science treatment, were accomplished easily without the use of drugs. I am convinced that the obedience, vivacity, and health they now manifest is mainly due to the correct concept of man's spiritual identity established in my thought through the faithful support of a Christian Science practitioner during the pregnancy periods. One of my greatest joys now is the knowledge that our girls are growing up in a home where we are endeavoring to prove that the Christ presence is their natural daily environment.
