An abundance of the good things of human living, including many years of fruitful employment and service up through the ranks to a position in management, a lovely home, fine' friends, and a wonderful sense of peace and freedom from care of any kind have been mine because of the sincere desire to put God first.

The need to raise a young son without a husband and father, and with little money, presented a big problem at one time. Employment outside the home became necessary for me, and the only available job was in an aircraft factory. As an opera and concert singer before marriage, I had occupied a position of some social status, but now, ten years later, in another area and with little job training, I had come "down" to this. In this new work, my pride told me I was now a lot less than a professional person in a career occupation. Many lunch periods were spent comparing complaints with other employees. Most evenings and weekends were filled with homely household tasks and playing the part of both parents. Discouragement, disillusionment, and self-pity took center stage. Advancement didn't come in my clerical work, and discontent grew until a serious physical condition forced a month's leave of absence.

This became a time of searching for life's real meaning. Mere existence was so difficult and things looked so hopeless, humanly, as to cause me once or twice to consider self-destruction. Without hope, and with great fear in my heart because of my love for the dear little boy who would be left alone, I sought help from a Christian Science practitioner. This loving, laughing, straight-speaking, consecrated man of God asked me what I had done for God lately. He told me to learn, and sing, every day, every hour, Hymn No. 324 from the Christian Science Hymnal, which starts:
