Many would agree that God is "a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). But until we know Him better, we may be reluctant to rely on Him for healing. I was introduced to God through the Christian Science Sunday School, where I learned to know Him as a loving Father-Mother who protects His children. Although I experienced several so-called childhood diseases, each one was healed quickly through prayer as taught in Christian Science. As a teen-ager, membership in The Mother Church helped me realize there is no satisfaction in drinking or smoking. Christian Science also came to my rescue in college, when I was about to fail.

During the summer before my senior year, I began to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly daily, praying to know myself as the intelligent idea of infinite Mind. My prayer was answered, for I was on the dean's list when I graduated, and was later accepted by three graduate schools.

I am especially thankful for a healing that occurred while I was at a Naval Training School. Our first week of classes ended with an examination intended to determine where we would be sent for future duty. Since the men who scored highest would be given a choice of stations, competition was tough. Early that week I began suffering with a serious head cold, which left me too tired to concentrate in class or study at night. Because I needed prompt relief, I called the local Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services Personnel, who came to see me. He told me exactly how to correct the false beliefs that were behind this problem—in other words, how to pray effectively. I was obedient, and the next day I was healed. Although I had not been able to prepare for the examination, I knew that its outcome could never separate me or my classmates from God's protection and love. We all earned good grades, and were sent to excellent duty stations. The highest score in the class was mine.
