My first healing in Christian Science came at a time when my husband, who had been under a doctor's care for some time without making improvement, was asked by a young friend to try Christian Science. My husband was taken to a Christian Science practitioner that same afternoon for treatment. That night he enjoyed a peaceful night's rest for the first time in more than a year. Naturally we both wondered how it had come about.
My husband had promised to stop taking his medicine for a week while the practitioner was giving him prayerful treatment, so he knew that it was Christian Science that had helped him. He had an appointment with the practitioner again, and I asked him to bring me something to read about Christian Science, and he did. The practitioner was happy to send me a book that would tell me all about it—the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy.
The next morning I started reading that precious book and continued for a week steadily. Then one day my husband said to me, "I've not heard you complain about that pain for some days. Don't you have it anymore?" I was startled at his question, for I had not thought about it for days. The pain referred to came from a tumor, which I had been told only surgery could help. My husband came up with the idea that no doubt the practitioner had been treating me too. So together we went to the practitioner to inquire if he had been praying for me too. He told me that in Christian Science we never treat anyone unless he asks for treatment. He went on to explain that many healings have come from reading the book, and no doubt that is what had healed me of the tumor. I cannot tell you how happy and grateful my husband and I both were for my relief, and I am also happy to bear witness to the fact that there has been no return of the trouble. I have studied and applied Christian Science steadily since that experience.
