"Things are looking up!" How good it is to hear this optimistic exclamation from a friend, relative, or businessman! It denotes a warranted hope or some present manifestation of desired results. It usually indicates a shift in thought from the negative to the positive.
At the human level of positive thinking, however, lurks the suspicion and often the expectation that the situation can change for the worse at any time. How much better for an individual to be able to state with confidence, "Things are looking up, for I am looking above material sense to realize the very presence and power of God, good, the one Mind, in all my affairs"!
Multitudes pass their days without really looking up, humanly or spiritually. With their eyes and thoughts glued downward to the earthly environment, to routine and limitation, individuals scarcely observe beautiful sunrises and sunsets and the glory of starlit nights, much less the spiritual heavens of reality. In fixing their gaze on beaten paths they ignore the golden highway of true perception. Mrs. Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health: "Mortals must emerge from this notion of material life as all-in-all. They must peck open their shells with Christian Science, and look outward and upward." Science and Health, p. 552;
