During the past few years my life has been richly blessed
During the past few years my life has been richly blessed. There is no doubt that these blessings are the direct result of the study and application of Christian Science. The following are just two instances which illustrate the practicality of effective prayer.
While working in a warehouse one summer, I failed to obey a rule of safety. A stack of plywood was being held in the air by a forklift, and I put my hand directly underneath to move a block of wood. At this moment the stack of several thousand pounds was accidentally dropped on my hand. When the plywood was lifted, I asked my co-worker, who was greatly concerned, to continue his work and told him that I would be all right. It looked to me as though my thumb would have to be removed. Although I wrapped my hand so no one would be impressed with the sight of the injury, I was alarmed and frightened. I went to the back of the warehouse, sat down on a stack of plywood, and prayed. I began to realize that an understanding of God had always led to the solution of my problems. I phoned a Christian Science practitioner for treatment and then left for home. Immediately the fear began to subside.
I spent the afternoon in earnest prayer, endeavoring to recognize man as God's spiritual, perfect idea, untouched by a human sense of accident. A great deal of the pain disappeared, and I was able to rest comfortably that night. Although I returned to work the next day, the healing was gradual. In the ensuing weeks the practitioner and I prayerfully considered truths such as, "Bones have only the substance of thought which forms them" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 423). The body responded to an uplifted sense of spiritual substance, and the thumb began to reform to a natural condition.
