The Absolute Nature of Christian Science

Christian Science is absolute because it is founded exclusively on God, the All and Only. Its teachings reveal God, Spirit, Mind, as the only cause and creator, including within Himself His spiritual creation, man and the universe. This is in accordance with the central theme of the Bible, "I am the Lord, and there is none else." Isa. 45:5;

But someone may ask, "If God, Spirit, is All, what of the evil and matter that seem to form so large a part of human experience?" Christian Science shows that the mortal, material sense of life is a misconception of existence, in which everything relates to a false sense of man's origin and is therefore untrue, unreal. This accords with Jesus' teachings in regard to evil or mortal mind: "Ye are of your father the devil. ... He ... abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him." John 8:44;

That Christian Science is absolute does not imply that it is abstract, theoretical, or merely the plaything of intellectuality. It would be of little or no value to humanity if such were the case. The substantial, demonstrable nature of Christian Science becomes apparent in the degree that its absolute truths are understood and put into practice in the healing of sin and sickness and in the solving of human problems.

Christian Science is absolute because it is based on undeviating divine Principle, God, "the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." James 1:17; Because it is the law of God, it can always be trusted to operate impartially and effectively in every circumstance. Its Principle being Love, it is never cold but always loving and compassionate, instantly available for human needs. Its warm, tender nature as well as its practical appeal is brought out by Mrs. Eddy when she writes, "Christian Science healing is 'the Spirit and the bride,'—the Word and the wedding of this Word to all human thought and action,—that says: Come, and I will give thee rest, peace, health, holiness." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 153;

Christian Science reaches each receptive heart just where it finds the individual, and at this point begins the necessary task of evangelizing the human through "the wedding of this Word to all human thought and action," replacing the human concept, step by step, with the Word, the spiritual idea, the Christ, the truth of perfect God and perfect man. The very perfection of Christian Science constitutes its utility, for it operates according to the underlying Principle of Christ Jesus' teachings and healing works: "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." Matt. 5:48;

The so-called human mind is a supposititious mixture of good and evil. Many parables of Jesus—the wheat and tares, figs and thistles, grapes and thorns—illustrate the truth that there can be no amalgamation of good and evil, Spirit and matter. In the pure metaphysics of Christian Science there can be no possible mixture of good and evil—no gray areas—any more than there can be partly right and partly wrong statements in mathematics if we are to prove its principle.

Sometimes someone argues, "But we are still in the human, aren't we?" Though this may seem true from the double-minded human standpoint, the actual viewpoint to be held in thought is that man is spiritual, harmonious, and perfect now. And the Christian Scientist strives to demonstrate this truth in every phase of his experience by expressing the love, purity, and integrity of the divine nature.

In Mrs. Eddy's time, a student challenged the statement made by another Christian Scientist to the effect that he still lived in his flesh. He asked Mrs. Eddy to clarify this important point. Her reply includes the following: "Christian Science is absolute; it is neither behind the point of perfection nor advancing towards it; it is at this point and must be practised therefrom. Unless you fully perceive that you are the child of God, hence perfect, you have no Principle to demonstrate and no rule for its demonstration." My., p. 242.

In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy has revealed the divine Principle and rules of healing. These rules entail putting off step by step the fleshly, false concept of man, created materially and subject to so-called laws of sin and sickness, and replacing each erroneous belief with the pure, spiritual idea of man created by God and subject only to God's laws of health and harmony. Every error presenting itself should be seen as an opportunity to prove the ever-presence and all-power of God, good. In the degree that this is honestly and consistently done, healing inevitably takes place.

The writer is increasingly impressed to note how often Mrs. Eddy proceeds to show the practical application of some absolute truth she has stated. But no one need feel discouraged because of the seeming disparity between absolute Christian Science and his present demonstration of its teachings. Rather should he rejoice that the pure metaphysics of Christian Science is revealed and remains forever intact, that it is constantly available, and that it can be demonstrated progressively in human experience as we strive to express the Mind of Christ. But let us always remember that every statement of absolute Christian Science is actually true here and now, that perfection, holiness, and abundance of all good are the underlying reality and forever facts of being, awaiting only recognition and acceptance.

From the foregoing it will be seen how essential it is to understand the absolute nature of Christian Science if we are to prove its healing power and fathom its infinite possibilities. Actually, Christian Science exists not alone to correct human misconceptions; its underlying objective, reaching beyond time, is to reveal man's divine nature, his eternal perfection as God's image and likeness, to unfold divine ideas, to manifest the absolute harmony of being, in short, to glorify God and prove Him to be the All and Only. This is the present and ultimate goal of absolute Christian Science.
