Mrs. Eddy writes, "In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God's allness" (Science and Health, p. 15). I made an earnest effort to obey this truth while I was suffering from a severe case of arthritis in my right hip and leg.

It is my conviction that each individual should be able to handle whatever problems confront him, and I therefore prayed to understand the unreality of the belief in arthritis. Many times when the pain would become dormant or leave, I considered that my work was adequate, and I believed I was healed. Then it seemed the trouble would return more strongly than ever, and I would need to get to work and study more earnestly than before. Many times I left the church service early or did not attend because of these pains. This condition continued to trouble me for some time.

Over the telephone one day I was asked by the chief usher in our branch church if I would usher at a Christian Science lecture to be given in our church. I was feeling well and said I would gladly help. On the day of the lecture the pain returned, and I was strongly tempted to revoke the agreement. However, I went to the edifice with the desire to help and remained until nearly the end of the lecture. I was on duty in the Sunday School annex, when I felt I must go home and pray. I proceeded to the main auditorium of the church to inform the chief usher of my decision to leave.
