One summer while preparing the evening meal, I had a deep-well fryer filled to capacity with cooking fat and heated to frying temperature for meat. In my rush I bumped the fryer, turning the contents over on my body from shoulder to foot and over one arm. Then, in what seemed to be a moment of overwhelming fear, I could only think, "There is only God present here." I fairly shouted "the scientific statement of being" given in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which reads in part (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."
Upon opening Science and Health at random, my eyes fell upon the statement (p. 412): "The power of Christian Science and divine Love is omnipotent. It is indeed adequate to unclasp the hold and to destroy disease, sin, and death." Immediately I relaxed. My hands, which had been clenched through pain, began opening, and there was no more pain.
That evening, because I was then serving as First Reader in a branch church, I prepared the reading for the coming Wednesday evening testimony meeting. The next day I was at work as bookkeeper. I read the following Wednesday evening, and was never absent from the desk or missed a day at work. The third day I wrote a Christian Science practitioner regarding this and asked for help to dispel any fear of the so-called aftereffects of a burn of this sort. The healing was soon complete.
It was also revealed to me that moments before the accident I had allowed an erroneous attitude to handle me. I had been deceived into believing that the actions and presence of another individual "burned me up." Replacing this error with love aided in the healing.
As a member of The Mother Church and a branch church, I have had the privilege of serving in many ways. I am increasingly grateful for having availed myself of the continuing good resulting from class instruction, which is provided for in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy (see Art. XXVI).
