We may have had people tell us, "Health and happiness are man's divine heritage. Claim it!" Probably, too, we have all heard that childhood is or should be the happiest time of life because children have no serious responsibilities, are so carefree. That may be the case with some children and their nature, but not with all children.

I know of a little girl who was very lonely for her mother, who had passed on when the girl was only one year old. She had not known her mother, of course, but seeing other children with their mothers and hearing them speak of them caused this child to shed bitter tears. When she asked why her mother passed on, she was told, "It was God's will." I was this child; and when I first learned something of Christian Science, I was glad to find out that God's will is only good.

Up to the time I was twelve or thirteen years old, I experienced a siege of chills and fever each summer. One day my father came home and found me ill with a fever, following a chill. By this time we had heard a little about Christian Science, so he brought Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and sat down by my bedside and read to me for a while. He then said, "Child, why don't you write to a practitioner and ask her to help you?" He had heard that there were Christian Science practitioners that prayed for you and you were healed. I told him I would do this. So as soon as I felt like sitting up, I got a copy of The Christian Science Journal, looked up the name and address of a practitioner in a nearby city (there were no other Christian Scientists in our town), and wrote to her with full confidence that I would be healed.
