A College Student Writes

Christian Science Makes Education Meaningful

Christian Scientists who are students in college enjoy a wonderful experience, for each day affords them the opportunity to apply Christian Science to their studies and other daily experiences. This is indeed a privilege, for it enables them to gain the real objective of their scholastic activities: understanding. The main purpose of education for a Scientist is not necessarily to increase one's earning capacity or to increase one's social acceptability, but rather to enable one to acquire a fuller representation of wisdom and understanding so that he may more accurately reflect God.

Both the writer of Proverbs and Christ Jesus were aware of the true objectives of education. We are directed in Proverbs (4:7), "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." And Jesus said to students of all ages, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matt. 6:33). With these objectives in mind, we find that acquiring the full measure of what is offered to us becomes a joyful and gratifying experience.

Christian Scientists at college realize that suggestions of mortal mind would daily try to slow or stop a student's progress. Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes in Science and Health (p. 233), "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power."
