Activities for the Armed Services
United States Naval Academy
Although the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, requires all midshipmen to attend church every Sunday, it does not require them to attend Sunday morning chapel services at the Academy. It gives them the privilege of attending the churches of their choice in the city of Annapolis. Thus at designated hours the different church parties form within the Academy Yard and march into the city in formation. It is an inspiring sight to watch these groups of uniformed men as they proceed to the churches of their choice.
After identifying themselves as Christian Scientists, midshipmen may become members of the church party that goes to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Annapolis. The men of this party who are under twenty years of age are invited to attend Sunday School, and those who are over the age for Sunday School go to church. Many of the midshipmen serve as ushers in the church, lending an added air of distinction to the services.
