Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy,...

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in her book "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 307): "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies. Never ask for to-morrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment." Christian Science has met my every need for almost forty years, and for all its blessings I am humbly grateful.

In 1952 I was attacked by rheumatoid arthritis. Because of insurance regulations in connection with my employment, I was asked to be examined by a physician. This physician said that there was no known cure for my condition. Owing to the fact that I took my stand for Christian Science instead of medical science, I was asked to take a leave of absence without pay from my position. I then had three problems to overcome: the physical problem of disease, a mental one of resentment at being laid off from work without pay, and a financial problem of lack. I did not work for nine months, and during this time we proved Mrs. Eddy's statement in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."

At the beginning of this experience I asked a Christian Science practitioner for help, which was most lovingly given. The practitioner was always ready to work for me at any time we called. My wife was also of much aid. Some nights she would get not more than two hours' sleep, but through her understanding of God she would arise the next morning refreshed and ready to care for me. At the most trying times my wife would get the Christian Science Hymnal and sing, and in a short while I would join her. We would sometimes sing for two hours at a time, since singing the hymns was always a great help. Little by little the healing came until I was entirely free from the physical condition.

The mental problem was also met with my release from resentment and a sense of injustice. It was realized that those in charge of the business were actually the children of God, that they had no unkind intentions, and that the matter was a business problem, not a personal one. When my healing was complete, I went back to work for the same company with a heart full of gratitude at being able to be active again.

The financial problem, which became acute when there was no source of income, was likewise met. Fellow workers in my business organization arranged to make a gift to us, using the holiday season as the occasion. Other friends did the same. These gifts of love served to break the mesmerism of lack.

Words cannot express my gratitude for all the good I have received, including the great blessings of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and the privilege of serving as First Reader in the latter. I am also grateful for class instruction. It is my hope to follow in the path of Truth and Love, letting my light shine so that all may see it.— Ellis A. Fitler, West Monroe, Louisiana.
