Called for Service
WHEN the children of Israel were called upon by Joshua to declare whom they would serve, whether "strange gods" or the one true God, they answered emphatically, "The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey." And so today in the world's distress, when men are being called upon to declare their allegiance to changing governments, those who recognize God as the one Ruler of the universe are reaffirming their fidelity to Him.
Christian Science reveals God as the Father and Mother of all, the one infinite source of all true relationship, activity, and expression. It likewise reveals man as God's perfect child, manifesting all that constitutes the divine nature. Whatever would appear to deny, disrupt, or disturb this harmonious relationship of Father and son, cause and effect, Principle and idea, is but the opposing argument of the so-called carnal mind, which is without reality or power.
No doubt can exist in the thought of the Christian Scientist as to where his endeavors are enlisted when he sees the evil forces of aggression arrayed against the power of God. He does not, however, take a personal view of the situation, which would lead to the condemnation of individuals and nations that seem to be the agents of evil; for he knows that spiritual man, the son of God, includes no evil tendency or nature. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 450), "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good." Such warfare is not a strife between persons. It unites the work of righteousness in all nations, and, as Peter said, "God is no respecter of persons; but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him."
