"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you...
"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This declaration has been proved in my experience. Christian Science came to me through the healing of my mother. Consequently, I have known nothing else since infancy. It has healed me of many so-called children's diseases. Since leaving the Sunday school I have had many proofs that this truth does make us free. I should like to relate a recent experience of healing for which I give praise to God. I could not sleep nor retain my food, and I was in constant pain and fear of everything. Nothing seemed to function normally. I had severe bowel trouble, and materia medica said that there was no help for this condition without an operation. I had much treatment, but seemingly could not get any relief, so I prayed very earnestly to my heavenly Father to be led to one who would understand my particular need. My prayer was answered. Through the patient, consecrated, and untiring work of a faithful practitioner I was healed.
The first thing I was told to do was to learn about the real man, and to know that I, in reality, was this perfect man of God's creating. To think that I was this real man—something I had never much realized before—brought me comfort. I took the Concordances and studied every reference on "man." It was unfolded to me to thank God for my food and be grateful for it. "The earth, at God's command, brings forth food for man's use" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 530). The healing took place gradually. I could eat and sleep. But the stubborn bowel trouble did not yield. Finally, one day the practitioner said that she knew the healing had taken place and I did not need any more treatment. I could not realize that this was so, and great human will was evident on my part, for I wanted the work to be continued. The practitioner was obedient to what God told her, and she advised me to thank God that I was healed. I left the office thanking God that I was healed and saying, "Not my will, but thine, be done." The next day there was normal action of the bowels—something which had not occurred for many years.
I can also testify that there is but one operation and that is the operation of Truth in human consciousness. I am learning that it is not the body primarily that needs to be changed; it is our thinking that needs to be corrected. I am most grateful that the practitioner had the spiritual insight to rebuke the error which was producing the disease. Mrs. Eddy says on page 453 of Science and Health, "You uncover sin, not in order to injure, but in order to bless the corporeal man; and a right motive has its reward."
