One of the outstanding characteristics of the beloved...

One of the outstanding characteristics of the beloved Leader of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, was her desire to share with humanity the truth which dawned upon her consciousness, and which later was proved available to heal and comfort mankind in every need. Desiring to follow her loving example, I am happy and grateful to bear testimony to the healing, comforting influence and power of Christian Science, because it has been proved effective in my life and experience.

Many years ago Christian Science met the need in our family, when a member who, according to materia medica, was beyond the help of medicine and the loving efforts of physicians, was in two months restored to mental and physical health. At this time I was not sufficiently conscious of need along any line to become interested in the teachings of Christian Science. I was happy in seeing this dear one restored to normal selfhood, but was too steeped in the teachings of false theology and too ignorant of the truths of Christian Science to reach out for its help in any direction.

It was eight years after this experience of healing in our home that my own suffering, mental and physical, led me to ask for Christian Science treatment. I was active in musical affairs many hours of every day, and problems of various kinds seemed too heavy and troublesome for me to rise above; so a complete nervous collapse resulted, and affected the nerves of the stomach. Severe pain, with loss of appetite and general depletion, brought about a very serious condition. All sense of taste left and I existed for many months on the most rigid and simple diet. Two physicians told me I must cease all musical activities for a year at least, and a complete rest of mind and body was demanded. I knew little about Christian Science, its practitioners, or its methods, but in desperation, and unknown to my family, I visited the office of an active Christian Science worker in Boston and asked for help. In one week the painful and nervous seizures of the stomach were healed, happiness and joy took the place of tears and great depression, and normal conditions regarding food and all activities were established. Not one musical or other right activity was discontinued. In fact, greater strength and freedom were manifested than ever before.
